Associated Press The United States Geological Survey reports the quake registered at 7.1 magnitude and centered about three miles north-northeast of Rabosco which is southeast of Mexico City.
Some media outlets are reporting that witnesses claim smoke can be seen rising from some of the buildings.
People reportedly fled into the streets from the building during the earthquake.
The Mexican government Tweeted out, that their emergency committee has been active and alerted residents to perform their evacuation procedures.
There are no reports of any injuries at this time.
The quake comes on the anniversary of a quake that happened in 1985 that killed thousands.
It was less than two weeks ago that an 8.1 magnitude earthquake killed about 100 people in southern Mexico.
