Students Get a Lesson in Mariachi Music

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - A famous mariachi group is teaching high school students from around the state the tricks and skills to play like the greats.

Students learned an array of songs and skills, from guitars to violins.

One of the many workshops the Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlan is holding for students from around the state took place at the Texas A&M International University on Thursday.

The workshop has 400 students currently in attendance.

"There's about 30 of us," says Vielka Gutierrez, of Zapata High School. "There are people from San Antonio, from Laredo, from Cotulla, Freer, Zapata and surrounding areas."

The mariachi will then host a concert benefiting student scholarships this Saturday, April 22 at 7:00 pm at the Laredo Civic Center.
