LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - The man accused of murdering a 16-year-old girl pleads not guilty in district court.

Mario Angel Gonzalez

Mario Angel Gonzalez appeared in court on Friday to be formally charged for allegedly killing Lesley Sanchez.

On July 27th, of 2017, police were called out to the walking trails near the Haynes Recreation Center where officers found the body of 16-year-old Lesley.

Authorities say Sanchez’s body was found with multiple stab wounds.

Neither Gonzalez or Lesley knew each other and officials believe it was a crime of opportunity.

Police eventually caught up with Gonzalez at a local convince store after he had taken Sanchez’s car from the crime scene.

Gonzalez was also wanted for another alleged sexual assault he committed in 2016.

Gonzalez was indicted the same day Sanchez was murdered.

The judge has set a trial date for December third.
