LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - Spring Break is right around the corner and a local organization wants to advise parents and teens the dangers of underage drinking.

SCAN held an event where several speakers spoke to community members on the number of underage alcohol consumption cases that occur during Spring Break.

The week of Spring Break is known as the time of year that has the most reported underage drinking and driving accidents.

Veronica Jimenez with SCAN says if your child is going to attend any parties during the break, make sure you know where the party will be held and always have additional contact information.

Jimenez says, "There's been a lot of accidents where people have lost their lives because of drinking and driving so we just want to create awareness and March and April is the time that we create awareness of underage drinking."

Experts strongly recommend parents to talk to their children about the dangers of drinking and how one mistake can ruin the rest of their lives.

Jimenez is asking the community to take part in the alcohol free weekend on March 30th to April 1st to pledge to not drink for 72 hours.

You can call Veronica Jimenez at 956-724-3177 for more information.

You must be 21 years or older to participate.
