SAN MARCOS, Texas (KSAT) - The San Marcos Police Department is investigating the events that led to a Texas State student’s death.

Twenty-year-old Matthew Ellis was found dead at an off campus apartment complex.

Friends of Ellis called police to the Millennium Apartments at around 11 am on Monday to report that he was not breathing.
Officials declared Ellis dead around 12:30 pm.

Preliminary reports indicate alcohol may have been a factor in Ellis’ death, but investigators are still awaiting toxicology results from the autopsy.

Ellis was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

A spokesperson for the university, Matt Flores says the university is investigating whether the fraternity had any social events prior to Ellis’ death.

Texas State’s Greek organizations must register all events through the Greek Affairs Office.

The fraternity did not have any registered events the day before Ellis’ death according to an online calendar.

The fraternity later changed their Twitter to private after the student’s tragic death.\
