LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - May is Hepatitis Awareness Month. And while millions are affected by the viral disease, local organization SCAN offers free testing for the public.
SCAN says currently 3.2 million Americans are living with Chronic Hepatitis C. However, about half of people with Hepatitis C do not know they have the disease.
The organization says baby boomers are five times more likely to be infected.
"The CDC recommends that anyone that was born between 1945 or 1965, which are the baby boomers, they come and get tested," says SCAN Clinical Director Gabriela Perez. "Anyone that has been in the hospital before 1992. Because Hepatitis C may be in your body, but you may not show symptoms."
SCAN says symptoms and future illnesses could emerge if any conditions are left untreated.
