NAMI Comes to Laredo

LAREDO, Texas (KGNS) - A nationwide group representing families affected by loved ones with a mental illness is building a local chapter in town.

Organizers say NAMI will help Laredo by educating people on how to support family members suffering from a mental illness.

Representatives from the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the nation's largest grassroots mental illness organization, held their first meeting to inform the community of their services.

Organizers say NAMI will help Laredo by educating people on how to support family members suffering from a mental illness.

The organizers go on to say they plan on filling a void in the community through a variety of programs.

"There are a lot of people out there that are dealing with mental illness or diagnosis, and they are doing the best they can. NAMI is here to teach one another about the stigma and support one another," says NAMI representative Andrew Horner.

According to the organization, one in five adults in the U.S. experience mental illness.
