LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - The City of Laredo will play host to softball and baseball games in the various PONY (Protect Our Nations Youth) South Zone Softball and Baseball Tournaments.
The action starts June 23, and will continue through the end of July.
There are 160 teams participating, featuring approximately 1,000 players in total - with an expected 3,000 accompanying family members.
"We're getting bigger every year," says Laredo PONY League President Richard Rosas. "We start off this weekend with a high school tournament. We've got about 22 teams - and on the softball side, we've got a PONY 14-year old and a PONY 12-year-old. They'll be playing softball with the girls. We've got 18 teams in that bracket."
20 high school baseball teams will be competing in the Turn Two Tournament - starting on Thursday, June 23, and continuing through Sunday, June 26.
Teams will be playing at Uni-Trade Stadium, Kruger Field, the United Independent School District Student Activity Complex, Laredo Community College South and Freddie Benavides Baseball Field.
This is a regional tournament only, and winning teams will not advance. However, the next tournaments are stepping stones to get the teams to the next level - including to the PONY League World Series.
The Women's Super Regional Softball Tournament, for Bronco 12 and Pony 14 levels will be playing at the Laredo Independent School District Women's Complex this weekend. Winning teams will advance to the PONY League World Series in Louisiana.
90 teams will be competing in the PONY League Super Regional Tournament from June 30 through July 3.
Pinto 7U will be playing at the LISD Women's Complex at Zachary Field.
Mustang 9U will be playing at Independence Hills Field.
Mustang 10U and Bronco 11U will be playing at Slaughter Park Field.
Bronco 12U will be playing at the Air Base Field.
Pony 13U will be playing at the Slaughter Field and Freddy Benavides Baseball Field.
The Pony 14U will be playing at Kruger Field and Dryden Park Field.
Winners from this tournament will advance to the Zone Tournament, starting from mid-to-late July. Some of those age level tournaments are taking place in Laredo, and others are taking place throughout the state.
Winners from the Zone tournament will advance to the PONY League World Series.
Laredo will showcase 21 boys and girls teams throughout the tournaments.
