(NBC) - A 12-year-old girl from Texas will undergo gastric bypass surgery in Cincinnati.

Doctors say the 203-pound girl needs this surgery to counter the effects of brain surgery that sent her metabolism haywire.

Alexis Shapiro has gone from 50 pounds to 200 pounds in two years, and now has type 2 diabetes.

Her story got international attention when, at first, U.S. military insurers refused to pay for her surgery. That decision has since been reversed.
