(NBC) - Back-to-school time can be tough on kids trying to get back into a routine.

Some parents say they are giving their children Melatonin to help them sleep.

Melatonin is a hormone in the body that regulates sleep, but you can also get the supplement over the counter.

With the school year starting, some parents are having trouble getting their children back in the routine of an early bed time. Some are looking to use sleep aids like Melatonin to help their kids catch some Z's.

Family nurse practitioner Melissa Crawford suggests parents should first try examining the bedtime routine that goes for both adults and children.

"It's in the child's best interest to turn of any electronic devices like iPads, computers and televisions an hour before and then incorporate a quiet environment and the same environment like the temperature in the room the same," said Crawford.

Melatonin is made naturally in the body but doctors say it's okay to take extra with caution.

Amanda Brandt, a mother of four, says she has used Melatonin with her children - and although it doesn't work all the time she prefers that option compared to the others.

"I would rather do that route than give them a prescription medication," said Brandt.

Nurse Crawford says parents should use sleep aids as a last option for their children and even themselves.

When trying to put kids to bed earlier, parents should do it slowly.

Doctors suggest gradually moving bedtimes in half-hour increments.
