(NBC) - In just 30 days, donations from the Ice Bucket Challenge to fight ALS have surpassed the $100 million mark.

The ALS Association announced that milestone Friday, as celebrities and ordinary citizens keep issuing challenges.

Donations pour in, and videos of ice buckets being poured over people's heads keep spreading on social media and in the news.

The president of the ALS Association promises that the money raised through the challenge will be used to fund cutting-edge research.

It's also targeted to provide care and support for people living with the incurable disease.

The $100 million in donations compares to 2.8 million received by the ALS Association during the same 30-day period last year.
