SCAN holds National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

This year is the 8th observance of this awareness day.

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) – March 10th is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, and SCAN intends to get the word out.

This year marks the eighth observance of this very important awareness day, which specifically seeks to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS among girls and women. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that women make up 24 percent of all HIV diagnoses among adults in the U.S. and that Hispanic women are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS. The rate of new HIV infections among Hispanic women is more than four times the rate of white, non-Hispanic women.

In support of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2014, SCAN co-sponsored a proclamation reading by the Honorable Raul Salinas, Mayor of the City of Laredo on Monday, March 10th, at 10:00 a.m. at UTHSC Laredo Regional Campus.

In addition, SCAN will be providing free HIV rapid testing to adolescent and adult females at its main office located at 2387 E. Saunders. Testing will be provided on a walk-in basis from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 midnight. SCAN is providing testing until midnight to accommodate individuals that are unable to get tested during regular agency work hours.

For more information about the proclamation reading or the free HIV rapid testing, please contact Gabriela Perez, LPC at 956-724-3177.
