LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A historical part of our town receives some special recognition.
Members of Laredo Main Street joined forces with TxDot to bring focus to the importance of the downtown business district.
"Right now it's really a great time for downtown Laredo," said Councilwoman Cindy Liendo. "We've got a lot of new projects coming up, an arts and entertainment district, so we want people to know where it is and we want them to come down and invest in the beautiful part of our city."
They hosted a sign unveiling ceremony to direct more traffic into the Central Business District Streets of Laredo. The sign's location is on I-35 South, pointing directly to the district.
"This is the heart of our city," said Liendo. "This is where the city began, and we're very happy to promote it more and working with Laredo Main Street, who has done so much for downtown Laredo."
"Laredo Main Street's mission is to promote and revitalize downtown," said Laredo Main Street Executive Director Pilar Montoy. "So for us, having this sign and directing traffic to historic downtown is a big accomplishment."
The historic streets of Laredo form the oldest independent settlement in the state of Texas.
