Children of UISD Read Across America

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - The spirit of children's author Dr. Suess is celebrated in honor of his birthday.

The students of Mueller Elementary School joined millions of other kids across the country in celebrating the National Education Association's 16th Annual Read Across America Event. The president of the Texas Teacher Association Rita Haecker wants nothing more than to share the importance of encouraging children to read at an early age.

"They are starting to understand from an early age that it's so important to read every day," said Haecker. "We're telling them to read for at least twenty minutes and we know that children that constantly read at home or school everyday will do better academically throughout the whole years at school."

Our very own KGNS news anchor Ann Hutyra was among the guest speakers that were reading famous stories by Dr. Seuss. The association's goal is to show the joy of reading and to build a nation of young readers.
