LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - This is a special day where it's time to raise awareness about a certain disease.
World Tuberculosis Day commemorates the founding of tuberculosis, and also brings attention to the problems it causes and the solutions that are taking place.
"We have one of the highest case rates in the whole state of Texas," said Nurse Supervisor Veronica Dominguez. "Being a border community puts us at the incidence rate. We are number nine out of the whole state of Texas, and most of the border communities are in the top ten for the state of Texas."
Tuberculosis continues to be an issue within our "border community." However, the case numbers have declined as the years have gone by thanks to achievements made to identify and contain the disease.
"Some of the ways is to identify those people that may be infected with tuberculosis, because you have to be infected with TB in order to develop the disease of tuberculosis," said Dominguez. "If you identify those people that are infected and give them preventive therapy, then you can prevent those active cases of tuberculosis."
There were 34 cases of tuberculosis in Laredo last year, which led to six deaths.
