The celebration starts in Laredo, and goes all the way to Arlington for the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games.
LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - Law enforcement officers gather for the kickoff of the annual Flame of Hope Torch Run.
About 70 south Texas law enforcement officers will take off from the I-35 check point Wednesday morning with the Special Olympics torch in hand. From there, the officers will pass the torch to runners in Dilley, Pearsall and San Antonio. Law enforcement officers have been doing this run since 1985. Over 11-million dollars over those years has been contributed from south Texas to the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games. This run also helps raise awareness for people with disabilities.
"It's important that our communities know people with disabilities are in our community, they are part of our community and they should have the same benefits as regular athletes."
The south Texas officers will take off from the 1-35 checkpoint at 6:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Texas law enforcement will pass the torch until it gets to Arlington.
