LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - One local educator is surprised with a big honor in her classroom.

Rachel Hinojosa is a 5th grade teacher at Newman Elementary. Today, KGNS interrupted one of her lessons to let her know she is this month's honoree of One Class at a Time.

There were several people there to congratulate Hinojosa, including UISD superintendent Bobby Santos and Laredo Federal Credit Union's Al Chavez.

"Just seeing the reaction of your students really tells us a lot about what you do in the classroom," said Bobby Santos. "And I know you're one of the best teachers that we have."

Al Chavez said, "On behalf of the Laredo Federal Credit Union, its board of directors, staff, and membership, we wanna award you with this big, big check for $500."

Mrs. Hinojosa's class recently completed a project that got them a large donation of diapers from Huggies, which the class donated to the South Texas Food Bank.

Every month one local educator is selected and surprised in the classroom with a check for $500 they can use for educational expenses.
