LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - Thanks to the help of volunteers, veteran John Edward Berry's home has been cleaned up, but the home still needs several repairs.

We first brought you the story last week.

Veteran John Edward Berry was living in a home that was in disrepair.

Volunteers spent days helping get Mr. Berry's home back in order but the house still needs so many repairs, now operation community cares wants to build Mr. Berry a new home.

The house would be on the same property and they would demolish his current home.

Habitat for Humanity will help with the building.

Mr. Berry is in great spirits and is looking forward to his new place.

Operation: Community Cares is raising money to build Mr. Berry his new home.

They hope to raise $19,000.

Mr. Berry was one of 22 survivors from the USS Ommeny bay.

The Ommeny Bay was sunk off the coast of the Philippines after being attacked.

Berry then floated in the water for two days before he was rescued.
