LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - Is the Laredo border safe? That's what one man from Alabama is setting out to find out.

Mark Hainds is walking along the border cities with a camera crew as part of a film documentary to show how the misconceptions other people have on border cities are wrong.

He worked as a research associate at Auburn University in Alabama before quitting to take on this project.

Hainds says so far the trip has open his eyes to a variety of people.

Hainds says, "Well one thing in particular is that I often find that the things we are told are exaggerated and for sure the Southwest, may see this as a dangerous area. I thought perhaps those perceptions were overblown I'm three quarters on the way through and I've verified beyond a doubt that is not true the people and fantastic I've had a wonderful trip and does not match up the perception of this area."

Hainds has been on his walk since October 27th starting in El Paso.

The final destination is Boca Chica beach near Brownsville.
