At 5:45 in the morning local time, a German battleship opened fire on troops in Danzig. Polish forces were overwhelmed, but held out for four weeks. More than 60,000 polish soldiers were killed and 25,000 civilians.
By the end of the war six-million people in Poland had been killed.
