ZAPATA, TEXAS (KGNS) - 18-year-old Ismael Gomez has been going to school in Zapata since kindergarten. He's made friends along the way, like Cecilia Mata. Their friendship started back in fifth grade over blueberry-flavored treats.

"It was in Ms. Carrizales class, right? It was Doc's birthday so we brought some snow cones and from there we became best friends, by snow cones."

Their friendship remained strong through their years at Zapata High School. Earlier this year, Cecilia asked Ismael to senior prom and he said yes.

"We've been best friends since the fifth grade and since it was his senior year I wanted to take him and it was an honor taking Ismael since we are best friends. And I had a great time with Ismael."

They danced but not the highlight of the night, for Ismael. Ismael Gomez was voted prom king by his classmates; which is an honor for him and his family.

"It meant a lot. It shows great character in his senior class that they thought that much of him to nominate him and vote for him. It was greatly appreciated, not only by me but by everyone in my family. It's a great honor for him."

As their high school days come to an end, prom night is something Ismael plans to re-live.

"I want to have a date with Cecila, and she can be my prom queen next time."
