George Altgelt has exceeded the number of signatures required to ask for a recall election on City Councilman Jorge Vera.
LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - A petition to recall Laredo City Council member Jorge Vera is now in the hands of the city, the petition was handed over to the city secretary.
Thursday morning the leader of the group calling itself "Vera pa Fuera" marched into city hall to hand deliver the required 132 signatures, and then some, to the city secretary.
George Altgelt says the group had a 24-hour span to get the signatures it needed; "In that short of a window we can have a city councilman's neck on the chopping block and the message isn't so much to the council, because that will be on deaf ears, as it is to the community; you have the power, it's in your hands and if you don't like what you've got you can do something about it rather quickly."
The signatures can only come from registered voters, in district 7.
132 signatures are required, but Altgelt says his group collected 158, just in case.
City Secretary Gustavo Guevara will have to comb through the signatures. "Once I complete that certification, I will take it to city council and I have to post by Friday put it on the agenda by Monday and the city council will vote to call a recall election if,I can make sure there's the correct number of votes." The City of Laredo has five council seats up for grabs, in November, if the council declares a recall election for Vera, that will make six.
If the group doesn't have the correct number of voter signatures, they will have an opportunity to get what they lack.but, because the deadline for the November election will have passed a recall election would have to be put-off until the next election.
