LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- One of the founders of the Zetas drug cartel is killed during a shootout with Mexican soldiers.
Galdino Mellado was among five people killed in a gun battle in Reynosa, Mexico, across from McAllen, Texas.
He is believed to be on of the military deserters who formed the Zetas, but reportedly no longer holds a command position in the cartel.
He had been on the run from authorities after excaping from prison. His death is another high-profile victory for president Enrique Peña-Nieto's crackdown on cartels in the country.
