Councilman Jorge Vera is putting the once a week trash pickup up for discussion at Monday's City Council meeting.

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - If you’ve seen an increase in flies around your house, you’re not the only one. Many people are blaming the increase in flies on the decrease in trash pickup. This will be the first summer where there is only trash pickup once a week. Councilman Vera is asking the city of Laredo's health department to speak about the problem on Monday. The health department as well as the city council members said they have received several calls from people in their district concerned with the flies.

"Because it does get hot. Laredo is a different climate, even though other cities in the state of Texas do a one day recycle and one day trash, we are unique because of our heat. And with the increase of flies, I think it is something we have to look at and see what we can do."

Vera said he is looking into the possibility of going back to twice a week trash pickup, at least for the summer months. The health department said to reduce flies, make sure you are washing out your trashcan frequently. Also, make sure the lid is completely closed after you throw trash out.
