The proposed ordinance is tire merchants will charge an extra $20 per tire if you do not return your old tire with it.
LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - Old tires are still seen thrown on the sides of the roads all over Laredo. That's after the city recently collected over 10,000 tires at their recent tire collection event.
Monday at city council, the Citizens Environmental Advisory Board will propose an ordinance to city council. This new ordinance would require the tire shop to charge an additional $20 fee, per tire, if you do not drop off your old tires. The new ordinance says you can get this "core" fee back within seven days of a new tire purchase. With the summer months coming up, old tires can cause a health risk to everyone.
(Riazul Mia\Environmental Services): "It's the mosquitoes, it’s a vector issue. And health department they enforce the tire ordinance and they've been battling these tires. We just held a tire collection event and we collected about 16,000 of tires. "
This ordinance is being proposed Monday at the city council meeting. If you do not bring back your old tires, the merchant where you bought the tires would get to keep the $20 fee. The city said they would make no money off of this.
