City council pulls back some plastic bag ideas

LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- After passing an early version of an ordinance, the Laredo City Council made some revisions to its future rules for plastic bag use.

Council members decided unanimously tonight to pull back on some ideas for the long-debated plastic bag ban.

One council member I talked to is just happy to finally see a the rule possibly make it on the books.

Another told me concessions had to be made to finally get it through.

And people who represent a local environmental organization say a ban could be stricter.

To some people, a rule that would limit the number of plastic bags drifting around the streets, wasn't written the right way.

Trisha Cortez represents the Rio Grande international study center, an environmental group.

Councilman Alex Perez is looking forward to when the ordinance takes effect in 2015.

He says the idea's been in the works long enough.

Carolina Ilanez is a Laredo-native, and now a student in Austin, where a similar rule is in place.

With the current decision, the plastic bag ordinance would take effect April 30th of 2015.
