LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - The city of Laredo continues work on its budget for the 2015 fiscal year.
At a budget workshop Tuesday, council members asked to include a three percent pay increase for all city employees.
That's on top of a six percent spending increase the city is adding into the next budget.
Laredo City Manager Carlos Villarreal said a 36 million dollar increase will include improvements to the airport and work on a new sporting venue.
It will also account for new employees, benefits expenses and the three percent raise.
"We're looking at about 1.5 [to] 1.6 million, generally for all of the consolidated budget for what council approved, which is a three percent raise," said Villarreal.
Villarreal says by law the city budget must be balanced.
Expenditures will be paid for by a mix of bridge tolls, increased property valuations, federal grants, and the sale of the Civic Center.
