LAREDO, TX (KGNS) – The Don't Mess With Texas Trash-off event is an annual event to clean up some of the litter that has been thrown in our streets. State wide, TxDOT and volunteer groups will be along the roads Saturday morning.
Right here in Laredo, you'll see groups on Loop 20, Highway 359 as well as Highway 59. Last year, 7.5 million pounds of trash was collected statewide.
"It's really important because it's how we support the Texas beautification act. Not only that, to keep our community beautiful and looking good. Texas grows by 1,000 people everyday, so you can imagine that the more people that come into the state, the more propensity to have little on our roads."
If you are driving Saturday, please be careful and be extra vigilant for the volunteer’s safety. If you are caught littering, there are some hefty fines. For the first offense, it will be a $500 ticket. For the second, it can go up to $2,000 and you can serve jail time.
