LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - A petition to remove Laredo district 7 council member Jorge Vera has cleared another hurdle.

Local attorney, George Altgelt is organizing the petition.

Altgelt said he met with the Laredo city secretary and city attorney this morning to go over a draft of the petition.

He said organizers want to make sure the document submitted will meet the criteria required by the city.

According to Altgelt, 132 signatures are required to initiate a recall election. That represents ten percent of the number of people who voted in the last District 7 election -- which took the form of a runoff.

Altgelt said, "If this issue does not galvanize the citizens of District 7, the city as a whole, regarding the standard by which are public officials need to be held -- if this doesn't galvanize them, what will?"

Altgelt said he's working to get signatures in by the end of the week in order deadlines for the November 4 election.

He said he intends to run for the position if there is a recall election.
