LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - The police hope to save lives with their annual Click-It or Ticket campaign. They said in years past, they've cited more drivers than in the bigger cities like Austin.
Last year in Laredo, five people were killed in accidents who were not wearing their seat belt. But Laredo police say even one, is too many. It is state law to wear your seat belt in a vehicle, no matter where you are sitting. Laredo police Investigator Joe Baeza said they have the public's safety in mind.
"You would figure throughout this point, most people would just automatically use seat belts because its for their own protection, but they really don't. There are a lot of people who don't use seat belts, there are a lot of people who don't put their kids in safety seats. But basically what it is, is the saving of peoples lives on roadways."
The Laredo police department will be getting a $10,000 grant. That grant will help pay overtime of police officers to be out on the field.
