LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) - Laredo Council Member Jorge Vera has been formally charged after he was arrested earlier this month.
A grand jury in the 406th District Court indicted Vera Wednesday for cocaine possession and making a false report to a police officer.
The charges stem from an incident in July when police say Vera offered cocaine to a woman at AJ's Bar.
The woman called the police who searched Vera's truck. Police say the vehicle had cocaine inside.
The indictment means that a grand jury found probable cause with the evidence in the case.
The district attorney's office will now prosecute.
"The case is now formally in the courts. The only resolution to this case now is plea agreement or jury trial," said Webb-Zapata County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz.
Police also arrested Jose Degollado in connection with what happened at AJ's Bar.
Degollado was employed by the district attorney's office. The office says it is recusing itself from Degollado's case.
