LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- The FBI has released a list of child safety tips for parents.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, San Antonio division, has released a list sharing tips to keep kids safe.

According to the bureau, every year thousands of children go missing.

Veronica Jimenez works with SCAN, which helps families in Laredo and says communication is key when comes to keeping your kids safe.

The first recommendation the FBI suggest is to know you child care provider and obtain references from family, friends, and neighbors.

Many states now have registries for the public to check someones criminal history.

Dean Priester is a parent and says by using references gives him peace of mind.

The second recommendation is to know the person watching your child.

Priester currently has his daughter in day care, and is now thinking about hiring a baby sitter. Not only does he already know the baby sitter but knows the sitters family as well.

The FBI says to remember to stay alert, informed and focused. Being available and taking time to really know and listen to your child helps build feelings of safety and security and will ultimately keep your kids safe.
