LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- Many people from the community made their way to the Laredo Public Library to attend a ceremony dedicated to remembering the Holocaust.
Yasmin Shariff is part Jewish and has Holocaust survivors in her family and says coming to events like this, she's able to teach her son about the Holocaust.
The speaker of the ceremony was Holocaust survivor as well and during the ceremony used pictures of her own family, and one of the conditions they were forced to live in.
Devenny Lupear is a teacher in Laredo and invited her students. She says these images help to bring the Holocaust to life for her students.
Learning about the Holocaust connects people of all faiths, ethnic groups, and backgrounds. Quoting the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, "We remember because we recognize the importance of preserving freedom, promoting human dignity and confronting hate whenever and wherever it occurs."
