LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - Thanks to a new law passed in September, those who are behind in taxes on their home have a better option. Now you can go to the Webb County tax assessor office and ask for a payment plan. As long as you make your payments every month, you are protected from a lawsuit against your property. Tax assessor Patricia Barrera recommends everyone who is behind to make a payment arrangement before July 1. That's when fees will go up.

"You'll also incur a 15% attorney fees so before that happens and before there is a lawsuit, and when there is a lawsuit, they will also charge you court costs. So if you are a homesteader and you are delinquent on your taxes, come to my office ask us for the installment payment contract, we have to by law give it to you."

These are for people who are delinquent on their 2013 homestead taxes. The payment plan can be a 12, 24 or 36-month plan of equal payments.
