LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - A new and innovative way to shorten a student’s time in remediation and help them move on to college-level courses is making the grade at Laredo Community College.

With last year’s implementation of the state-mandated Texas Success Initiative Assessment (TSI) at all Texas public colleges and universities, LCC took swift action by creating a TSI initiative pilot program, which was implemented by the LCC TSI Taskforce under the direction of the Division of College Readiness.

The program helps students who are placed in developmental education courses reach college readiness in a timely manner and enroll in college-level courses sooner, saving them time and money.
Created by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the TSI exam includes mandatory cut-off scores that place students into one of three categories: college ready, developmental education, and adult basic education.

Dean of College Readiness, Marissa G. Longoria, said that despite the challenges of the new placement exam, the program has seen promising results.

During the 2014 spring pilot, 49% percent of the 96 students advanced out of the developmental education course in which they were registered. Many of the students were enrolled in the lowest developmental courses and advanced one to three levels, skipped up to three courses, and shortened their college studies by two or more whole semesters.

LCC’s College Readiness and the TSI Taskforce hope to serve as a Best Practices model for the state of Texas.

The TSI Taskforce will continue to offer the new program this summer with a series of summer boot camps for incoming freshman, including June 7- 13, June 16-20 and June 23-27.

The summer boot camps are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and are free of charge. Participants will only have to pay the cost of the test.
Students are encouraged to apply by visiting www.laredo.edu/sbc.
Semester-long help also is available.
