LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - Go behind the scenes of microlending as Laredo Community College and Literacy Volunteers of Laredo bring to the community noted author Bob Harris for a special presentation on Friday, April 11 at 7 p.m. in the Kazen Student Center at the Fort McIntosh Campus.

Proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing literacy materials for Literacy Volunteers of Laredo, said Rachel Bohmfalk, LCC library director and Literacy Volunteers board member.

Harris, author of International Bank of Bob: Connecting Our Worlds One $25 Kiva Loan at a Time, has worked in a variety of different settings and mediums throughout his career, including writing for television shows and working as a comedian.

Some of his most notable works as writer, include the TV shows Bones and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. While traveling around the world for Forbes Traveler, Harris stayed in and reviewed luxurious hotels and opulent cities. His life was changed, however, when he began to pay closer attention to the men and women who work behind the scenes to make such opulence possible.

Moved by the plight of the poor in the locales he visited, Harris found his way to Kiva, a microlending organization that helps individuals in more than 75 countries.

Through Kiva, ordinary individuals can loan money that is in turn loaned out to men and women struggling with poverty. When his initial loan was repaid, Harris decided to keep lending the funds out. Curious about the impact his funds might be making, Harris hit the road to witness the results for himself.

During his presentation, Harris will share what he learned throughout his journey, as well as his experience of the day-to-day lives of those impacted by Kiva’s loan program.

In addition to the presentation, Literacy Volunteers of Laredo will host a silent auction and attendees can bid on a variety of items. Refreshments also will be served.

Bohmfalk invites the public to help support literacy efforts in Laredo. Admission is $20, and LCC students with a current and valid Palomino ID can enter for free.

Tickets for the presentation can be purchased in advance from the Literacy Volunteers of Laredo office, which is located in P-10 at LCC’s Fort McIntosh Campus, or from any Literacy Volunteers board member.
