LAREDO, TEXAS (LCC) - Thanks to the financial donations of Stripes customers throughout Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico, 43 Laredo Community College students will receive scholarships to help them fund their educational endeavors.
In late 2013, Stripes Convenience Stores began an in-store campaign to help support the Stripes College Scholarship Fund.
Customers were invited to buy $1 paper cut outs with the intention of helping local college students pursue a college education. The campaign far exceeded expectations, managing to raise $545,000 in four weeks.
“Young people are our future, and there’s no better investment we can make in the communities where we live and work than helping our youth go to college,” said Sam L. Susser, chairman, CEO and president of Susser Holdings Corporation, the parent company of Stripes.
“As we look to the future, we believe that education is the key to unlocking the potential for success. Today, historically disadvantaged students are not reaching the same level of educational attainment as the general population, and it is our hope that by partnering with our customers and our team members, Stripes can positively impact this critical issue,” added Susser.
Stripes is underwriting all administrative costs so that all money raised will go directly to student scholarships.
LCC students interested in applying for one of the $1,000 scholarships are encouraged to apply now at the Financial Aid Center in P-24 at the Fort McIntosh Campus or in the William N. “Billy” Hall Student Center, room 123, at the South Campus.
Applicants must be second-year LCC students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
