LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- Laredo Police officers began working overtime on Monday, August 18th to patrol for drunk drivers.

More Laredo Police officers will be out until the 2nd of September.

Some are tasked exclusively to look for intoxicated drivers.

Laredo Police Department spokesperson Joe Baeza said police have seen an increase in DUI arrests this year.

Baeza recommends that residents plan their Labor Day parties accordingly.

"For the people who are actually throwing the get-togethers, what we ask them is to make sure that if their guests look like they've had one too many, for them to have somebody who has not been consuming any alcohol -- not the person who has been consuming the least amount of alcohol, drive them home," said Baeza.

A grant from TxDOT will pay for the additional hours.

A first-time DUI offender could face a $2 thousand fine, six months in jail and a suspended driver's license.
