City Council is taking steps to make Laredo more environmentally friendly with the issue of plastic bags coming up once again.

Council spoke about how they can enforce a possible plastic bag ordinance.

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - HEB spoke out to city council in support of the ordinance that was passed, hoping the city will soon start some programs to educate the public. This ordinance is set to go into effect January 10, 2015.

Right now, the ordinance is written so all grocery store type bags will be banned. The bags you use for produce and fruit would still be available. The city said they have been wanting to do this for years to keep the city clean. This would also help with costs of cleaning up the plastic bags throughout our streets.

"One of the issues the council members and citizens have brought is the plight of the plastic bags on our environment. If you travel in areas where it's undeveloped or even just undeveloped, you might see plastic bags stuck in trees or in the brush, so obviously just the beautification."

Plastic bags also get caught in storm drains and cause flooding in our city. This ban has been a work in progress for years now and was passed last year. Back in 2008, the city council voted against the ban.
