The 2014 - 2015 school year is in session for L.I.S.D. and for Superintendent, Dr. Marcus Nelson that means working with the district’s board of trustees and financial team on how to distribute the budget.
"Our budget process is our attempt to justify how to collect revenues through the year and how to allocate those expenses."
Dr. Nelson says when deciding where to spend the money nothing is off the table.
"We look at everything from busses, facilities, energy management, counseling services, libraries…. Its comprehensive process to come up with the services our students deserve."
Every year the district looks at ways to provide better learning experience for their students by looking at what areas the district can improve.
Money also goes toward technology and making the necessary enhancements in the classroom. Andres Palafox says he's happy to hear the district is making improvements but says what about the districts athletes?
"Education is important but also sports are important. There's kids into education but were leaving a lot out."
Palafox says sports help students stay in school.
"I know it helped me. A lot of my friends quit and didn't graduate, but I know I had do well in class to play."
Dr. Nelson says, "As we go through the budget we have to identify priorities and for us student performance is where our focus is and there's no negotiating that."
