Laredo Parks and Recreation holds groundbreaking ceremony for boxing gym

The boxing gym will be open to boys and girls of all ages.

The gym will come with plenty of boxing equipment, and even a boxing ring.

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - Laredo is home to two boxing world champions, but could there be a third champion coming soon?

The Laredo Parks and Recreation Department held a groundbreaking ceremony for a brand new boxing gym at the Farias Recreation Center. The gym will be opened to everybody, boys and girls.

"It's an opportunity to add to health and wellness, and to keep kids active with different exercises and sports," said Assistant City Manager Horacio De Leon. "So this facility will be definitely an amenity here in the neighborhood and to people of district seven."

The gym will come with plenty of boxing equipment, and even a boxing ring. There will be a boxing coach in house to assist anybody wanting to step up their skills. City councilman Jorge Vera cannot wait to see who becomes the next champion.

"The city has the responsibility to give them the tools for them to become the next champion," said Vera. "I think that we haven't seen the last champion coming out of Laredo, but the city of Laredo is going to give them the tools that they need to become the next champion."

The new gym should be open within the next six months.
