Laredo, TX (KGNS) - A regular traffic stop by a Webb County Sheriff Deputy Thursday morning on Highway 59 led to the seizure of almost $147,000 in cash, sheriff’s officials said.
While no arrests have been made, the case is being investigated and a couple was detained for questioning.
After stopping a 2001 GMC Yukon immediately west of the Highway 59 rest area, the deputy meticulously searched the vehicle until he came across the $146,980 in cash. The money was hidden underneath the center console in 31 bundles wrapped in cellophane paper.
Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar lauded the work of the deputy and noted how this seizure is an indication of how far his deputies are willing to go to stop the flow of illegal currency.
