LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - Most high school students go to the beach or go on vacation during Spring Break, but some kids would rather serve some veterans.
The Area Health Education Center (AHEC) had their last day of career camp. The camp is intended to introduce high school students to a variety of health careers. They added a special service learning project to this year's camp, which has the kids making a difference for local veterans at Volunteers Serving the Need.
"We're so excited that we have these young people here to help us with the holiday bag program," said Volunteers Serving the Need Founder Gigi Ramos. "They're just helping us bag the groceries, and just doing a little bit of everything."
The students were more than happy to help out. Volunteer Angel Vasquez said that the experience gives him a good feeling.
"It's important because not only are we helping this place out, but we're also helping ourselves by learning about this," said Vasquez. "So whenever maybe we get older, we know that there's things such as this and that we might learn from this experience."
The Area Health Education Center is made up of roughly 137 high school students from all around Laredo.
