LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - They hope they will never need to use it, but there may come a day when every second counts. The Laredo Airport and Laredo Fire Department are teaming up to build a new fire station right next to the Laredo International Airport.
"In the event of any sort of action. Especially in aviation, seconds can mean lives. And this station being located where it is allows the fastest response time to the area of an accident here at our airport," said Timothy Franciscus-Timm, Airport Marketing Manager.
The new fire station will be located next to the terminals, so if any accident were to happen, the fire department would be able to respond within seconds.
Daniel Rodriguez is a frequent flyer. He said it's a good idea to have the fire department close by.
"It's a good idea to have a close fire department just in case of an emergency, it's very important to have a handle, you know."
The Laredo Fire Department currently services the airport from the fire station next to the former military base. They already have what they call "ARF" trucks, which stands for Aircraft Rescue Firefighting Vehicles. These vehicles are equip for specifically fighting fires on airplanes.
"This specific truck has a lot of special equipment. It has a funnel capability, that fuel burns a lot hotter than your normal few. It also has cameras as your pouring out the fire itself. And then of course you have the special equipment for the Firefighters themselves."
The fire station costs about $3.8 million dollars. The Federal Aviation Administration is funding 90-percent of the project, while the other 10-percent is coming from the city.
The Airport Advisory Board is meeting tomorrow to approve the final things needed to complete the project. Completion date is scheduled for May.
