Commissioner John Galo says he wants the range to open, it just might open with a different club.

They say the Laredo Rifle & Pistol Club has not complied with their requirements they asked for in December.

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - Webb County is calling a special meeting to talk about the gun range where the Laredo Rifle & Pistol Club used to be. The meeting will be held this Thursday inside Commissioners Court. Commissioner John Galo put these items on the agenda. He says it's for several reasons.

Commissioners are meeting on Thursday, and will vote on whether to put the gun range property up for bids, to rent from the county.

(Commissioner John Galo): "This is exactly what I was afraid of back in September 23, 2013. That we were going to be at this point, at this time down the road. The range has been closed this whole time, when it could have been open. There's other club's that could get together, there are other people that willing to step up and see money to get this thing open."

Commissioner John Galo said he wants the range to open and would like to see it rented to a non-profit group. He said doing that would protect the county against injury lawsuits, if one were to occur at the range.

"It's an ideal situation for a range. Obviously they said they had the range from 1300-1700 members. It's a good public service."

If the commissioners do vote to allow the range to go out for bids, the Laredo Rifle & Pistol Club will be allowed to place a bid on the range. James Stanley is a former president of the Laredo Rifle and Pistol Club. He said some members are gathering money to try to save this club from forever closing its gates.

"Some of us are putting up some money. We can't put up very much but we'll bid also and we'll what happens. I think the county is making a big mistake. That club has saved the county thousands of dollars over the years and in the past the county judges have realized that we need a shooting club."

Those who plan to bid as well as Laredo Rifle and Pistol Club members are expected to be at the commissioners meeting. That meeting will be held this Thursday, at 12:15 inside commissioner’s court.
