LAREDO, TEXAS (KGNS) -- Citizens of Laredo unite tonight in a big effort to help a World War II veteran who is living in Laredo, and is in desperate need of assistance.

A routine wellness visit to the man's house alerted community members of his condition and the effort started from there.

Through a page set up on Facebook, donations have started coming in and volunteers are showing up at a man's house to lend a hand.

John Berry is 93-years-old and has been living in Laredo since 1992.

He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945 and is one of the last known survivors of the USS Ommaney Bay.

When Juan Flores went to visit John, he was surprised at what he saw.

Today volunteers showed p to help clean and organize John's house.

Many parts need major repair, including plumbing and fixtures in the bathroom.

On Friday evening, a wheelchair was donated to replace his old one.

John says he is grateful for it all.

But the effort isn't stopping there.

A Facebook page started to help John already has more that 500 likes and more volunteers are expected to help this weekend.
