LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - It can be tough to find something good to eat in a world full of unhealthy food. But now now the children of Laredo can get a free, healthy meal!
Laredo's Kids' Cafe dishes out healthy food Mondays through Fridays from 3:00 to 5:30 pm. The food is served as a way to combat diabetes and obesity, as well as a way for children to eat when their parents don't have much of a food budget.
"They pay their bills and rent, they pay everything else before food becomes the last thing," said Kids' Cafe Director Jesse Olivares. "Lots of times, it minimizes what they eat. The schools are helping out, they eat at school, they come here, and we try to help the parents as well."
Olivares encourages people to come by and volunteer. The cafe has had multiple speakers come by, such as Miss Laredo, Border Patrol, and Laredo Fire Fighters. The Laredo Boys and Girls Club regularly helps out by getting involved and teaching the children social skills.
"It takes a wonderful staff, collaboration, school systems, Boys and Girls Club, the Food Bank.....a lot of people from the community coming together to make this possible." said Olivares.
The food is absolutely free, and any school age child up to 18 years old is welcome to come by.
