Mayor Raul Salinas congratulates incoming CBP Commissioner

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - The new Commissioner of Laredo Customs and Border Protection is here.

Career law enforcement official and former White House Director of National Drug Control Policy R. Gil Kerlikowske was confirmed Thursday to be the CBP Commissioner. City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas was on hand on Friday to congratulate him in his new post.

Kerlikowske previously served as deputy director at the Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

The bulk of Kerlikowske’s career has been in local law enforcement. He served as chief of police in Seattle, Washington and police commissioner in Buffalo, New York. He’s twice served as president of the Major Cities Chiefs, an organization representing the largest city and county law enforcement agencies in the US and Canada, and he was awarded the Presidential Service Badge for his service in the US Army.

Kerlikowske holds a B.A. and a M.A. in criminal justice as well as an Honorary Doctor in Humane Letters from the University of South Florida.
