The Pentagon has released a new report regarding the latest numbers on military suicides. Officials say suicides across the military dropped by more than 15% last year. But, among Army National Guard and reserve soldiers, the rate increased.
According to the four military services, there were 289 suicides among active duty troops last year, down from 343 in 2012.
The drop provides some hope that prevention programs may be taking hold. But, the report raises questions whether those programs are getting to the citizen soldiers. As suicides among Army National Guard and reserve members increased from 140 in 2012 to 152 last year.
