"I think we've made progress in making sure we meet the needs of the county”, says Commissioner Jamie Canales.
Webb county its the 6th largest district in the state of Texas and with only two fire stations you can imagine how hard it is for county fire fighters to get to people in need. It’s that reason County commissioners are moving forward with plans to open a new fire station.
Canales says,” We need to build a facility that meets the need of our community. Once we have a centralized location it'll be easy to get to the different locations.”
One of the reasons the county is moving forward is to have better response time. Brenda Robles owns a store in Los Lamos Ranchitos and has witnessed first hand how long it takes to get help.
"Me and my dad were driving down the hwy and we wondering why it takes so long.
Currently half of the counties equipment is stored at the fire station on highway 59 and the other half in Bruni, TX about an hour away. With this new facility there will be more space to house more equipment in a more centralized location.
Brenda has lived in Webb County for a few years and is aware of the dangers of not having a fire station closer.
"Out here there’s no public water supply and there’s a lot of brush so we really need a facility close. It's 18 miles from Laredo, so it's along way. By then your house has burn down.
